During this second week-long program, students will enhance their understanding of the interconnectedness of South Florida Ecosystems by studying areas on the West Coast of Florida. They will be given the opportunity to meet and work with scientists and professionals in the field of restoration science from the Everglades. The program again offers dual enrollment credits as with  H20 to Go! Connections.


Students will visit : V Lab

Florida Gulf Coast University Vester Field Station.  Students will be accommodated at the Vester Field Station which will provide the base of operations for all activities on the West Coast. The Field Station is part of FGCU and will be supported by FGCU professors and staff. Students will be given the opportunity to take boats and canoes to various study locations in the waterways in the area.

Estero Bay.  Students will be given the opportunity to participate in marine research in the bay and explore the many facets of the unique ecosystems and how it was impacted during the 2010 Deep Horizon Oil Spill.

Caloosahatchee River.  Similar to the waterways on the east coast, the Caloosahatchee River directs water from Lake Okeechobee to the west. Students will learn about impacts on the coast to the environment and industry,

Everglades Restoration Area.  Students will experience some of the impacted areas on the West Coast and hike through areas of restoration with scientists and researchers.

The Conservancy of South West Florida.  The  Conservancy  Science and Research Department works to enhance student understanding of ecosystems and associated wildlife in  Southwest  Florida.

This program is offered to all incoming 10th  -12th-grade students that have  completed H20 Connections.  High School students who complete the week and all associated assignments under course  EDG 4930 Everglades Restorations. A Research and Fieldwork Approach will receive three undergraduate credits.

Spaces are limited. Only 18 students will be able to register for the program. Early registrations will be successful and there will be a waiting list created for those who apply after the program has reached capacity.

What is the cost?

The cost for the program is  $850 made payable once we have confirmed receipt of your application and acceptance into the program. FAU transportation and owl card fees are NOT included ($42.04).
